Can
a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child
of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I
have inscribed you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually
before me. Your builders outdo your destroyers, and those who laid you
waste go away from you. > (Isa 49:15-17 NRSV)
In
this passage, God was talking about the walls of Zion. He was responding
to the desperate cry of His people who felt forsaken, forgotten, –living
in the midst of devastation and destruction.
Perhaps
in this instance it is the chronicle which primarily reflects and reinforces
how important it is to remain still in The Secret Place and let God build
the appropriate walls. This revelation really illustrates how we can feel
as though there has to be more! For some of us we cry out, oh Lord, there
is something wrong with this picture. Are we missing something?
I
was reading Isaiah 49:15-17 (out of context) as a two-verse exhortation
to myself. I was trying to fathom how God was always aware of me. “My
walls”? (As if my walls were the only walls that exist) are ever before
Him. The phrase, “ >YOUR WALLS are ever before me”, jumped out at me.
God
began to show me solid walls, walls with cracks in them and walls that
had been leveled …all in the same picture. They represented the unseen
walls of individuals. At first, I was somewhat confused about what it
meant. It was somewhat unclear how this could be. Nevertheless, as He
spoke, I wrote down the things that I heard. To portray a visual for the
reader, consider the two types of walls in years past as a parallel for
the unseen walls. There were PUBLIC and PRIVATE walls.
The
greatest of the walls were the solid fortress CITY WALLS (public), which
were built by and maintained by the "LORD OF THE KINGDOM. The city walls
were for the protection and preservation. Neither friend nor foe could
enter without permission.
The
PRIVATE WALLS relate to the family structure ...where the family unit
builds Godly character traits and establishes identity and a sense of
security. These walls can become cracked even from the foundation.
The family’s responsibility is to provide instruction, loving care, and
to convey wisdom. Its primary purpose is the teaching of spiritual principles,
thus providing guidelines and instruction for living. These walls or foundations
are critical to individual and family well-being. They carefully guarded
the family from outside influences. If God is not at the center of all
the family effort, the individual and family become dysfunctional. Each
member goes through life with its character built on a cracked foundation.
When
our private walls become cracked we begin to build our own CITY WALLS,
instead of allowing the Father to guard and protect us. An inability to
trust causes us to appoint ourselves as our own WATCHMEN and WALL BUILDERS.
We become captive and ultimately isolate ourselves from the very protection
God wishes to provide. What a dangerous thing to do! Because of our distorted
viewpoint, we cannot distinguish the difference between friend and foe;
consequently, to be on the “SAFE SIDE”, we are likely to let NO ONE into
our secret place including God. The irony is the real enemy was inside
the city when we built the wall. Oh what a mess! Someone once said, “I
have met the enemy and the enemy is me”!
