The Covenant
-the Chronicle by Glenda Wilson
And God said, “this is the token of the
covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is
with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it
shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall
come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be
seen in the cloud; (Gen 9:12-13-14 KJV)
As usual I
thought I was going in one direction and the Lord took me another. I had
been thinking about the word bow in its verb tense, as in every knee shall
“bow”. I decided to do a word study in my computer bible program… you
guessed it, I found bow (the noun) and. bow (the verb) in the same search.
I saw that
the KJV says “bow” not rainbow …The word there is translated “of bending;
a bow, for shooting (strength) an arrow. I began to see a bow stretched
forth in the heavenlies … shooting arrows to the earth. I began to think
of Isa 49:2 KJV)
… And he hath made my
mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and
made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me.
I
could sense a parallel between the arrow and the sword …the bow represents
His mouth …when He spoke the word it came forth as arrows which splashed
the sky with color as they went forth …and so the covenant promises were
established. The first covenant promise was that He would never again
destroy the earth with water. That sign was manifest in the clouds… the
sign of the eternal covenant …Jesus was manifest in the earth.
In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. The same was in the beginning with God, All things were made by
him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. . (John 1:1-3
KJV) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld
his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of
grace and truth. (John 1:14 KJV)
Ironically, the word
in Hebrew for children, sons and daughters is arrow …especially “ben,
bane” is son (as a builder of the family name). Jesus was the firstborn of
many brethren.
God, the
father stretched forth His bow and released the Word (His Son) and
established an everlasting covenant with His people. By and through Jesus…
the firstborn, all things were created including the rainbow.
From now on
when I see the rainbow, I will always see the Hand drawing back the bow
sending arrows to the earth.
So shall
my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing
for which I sent it. (Isa 55:11 NRSV)
